Tom Leon of Leon's Furniture - 2002 Retailer of the Year

Tom Leon was born in Welland, Ontario in 1925. At the very young age of six, Tom started working in the family business on a part-time basis and by the age of sixteen was working full-time. Tom received his degrees in English and Commercial studies while attending night school. Family is very important to Tom; he has been blessed with seven children, nineteen grandchildren and has been married to Connie for 14 years. Through his career in the family business, Tom has held the following positions: Assistant to the President, President and C.E.O. and later appointed Chairman in addition to his President and C.E.O duties. Today, Tom Leon holds the distinctive position of Chairman of the Board of Leon's Furniture.

Throughout his life Tom has never shied away from community service – he was Vice President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce at the age of 25 and Alderman of the city of Welland in 1963. In the early 50's he was involved in establishing a group called “Boys Town”. This organization helped under privileged boys and was active in sports and social events. In 1953, Tom was voted in as a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus for the city of Welland. Tom and his late wife Ellen established the very First Chapter for Children with Learning Disabilities and he served as President of this Chapter for several years. In 1989, Tom joined the foundation of Centenary Hospital, now called the Rouge Valley Health Center in Scarborough, Ontario. He later chaired the foundation board and headed a capital campaign drive in the early 90's. Upon completion of Mr. Tom's term as chairman of the foundation board the Hospital dedicated the computerized library situated at the front foyer of the hospital as the “Tom Leon Health Resources Center”. Most recently, Tom spearheaded a major financial contribution by the Leon family to the Welland Health Center in tribute to his late parents, Ablan and Lena Leon. Tom also provides for the care of the sick and under privileged through contributions to the Tom Leon Charitable Foundation.

Leon's Furniture is one of Canada's largest furniture retailers generating over half a billion dollars in sales annually and employs more than 2000 employees in 49 stores located in nine provinces in Canada.
